Gaillard Island is a man made island in the middle of Mobile Bay. It was created from sand and silt dredged from the shipping channel. It is off limits to people so it is a safe haven for the birds that nest there. It is known as a Brown Pelican rookery. As you travel around the island, you can see Brown Pelicans nesting in the rocks. You have to look closely to see the baby pelicans because they blend in with the white rocks.
