The SS United States was brought to Mobile to be cleaned and prepared for sinking into the Gulf off of Destin, FL. On the tour I took with Historic Blakeley State Park, I learned that the smoke stacks are over 6 stories tall and will be removed so they don’t stick out of the water when it is sunk. The ship is huge and it will take them over a year to finish the job.
