On my cruise to see the SS United States on Historic Blakeley’s boat Delta Explorer, we passed a lot of interesting sights along the Port of Mobile. Austal USA builds various vessels for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, including Littoral Combat Ships, Expeditionary Fast Transports, and Offshore Patrol Cutters. Container ships download cargo to trucks and trains at terminals along the Mobile River. Cruise ships like the Perdido Queen make trips up and down the river. Tug boats push cargo barges to waiting terminals so it can be distributed across the US on trucks or trains. The Port of Mobile was recently ranked as the second fastest-growing port in the U.S. by Forbes.
