







Great Egrets are a common sight when you go to Meaher State Park, but over a hundred years ago they were almost hunted to extinction for their feathers to adorn women’s hats. It lead to the beginning of the Audubon Society and the reason the egret is them emblem bird. https://www.audubon.org/about/history
I will probably always think of them as Great White Egrets, because that is the name they went by when I started birding. The name has been changed to Great Egret to avoid confusion with the white morph version of the Great Blue Heron and to address it being found globally.
