Pottery Class at Eastern Shore Art Center

Ready for 1st Firing

Eastern Shore Art Center gives classes in making pottery as well as drawing, painting, and photography. I took one a few weeks ago and have the vases and bowls to prove it. I found that I am not a potter. It takes weeks to make one item. We made pots on the wheel or from a slab of clay rolled through a press. Once you form your item, you let it sit to dry out. After it has dried it goes in the kiln for the first firing. It is then glazed before the 2nd firing. You have to leave an unglazed edge on the bottom so that the glaze does not drip down onto the kiln and stick. If that happens, your pottery item has to be broken off from the kiln and it can ruin both the pot and the kiln. I’m glad I took the class. It was very interesting. I think I’ll stick to photography.
