There are four generations of monarch butterflies born each year. The first three generation have a relatively shorth lifespan that lasts for around two to six weeks, however, the fourth generation of monarch migrates to warmer climates and lives for about eight months until spring arrives. Fourth generation monarchs are born in September and October and are biologically different from previous generations. They live longer (8-9 months) and do not mate or lay eggs until the following spring after they fly north and reach areas with milkweed. These Monarch caterpillar will become 4th generation Monarch butterflies. They are eating non-native tropical milkweed in the butterfly garden at my school. They will probably migrate to Mexico for the winter.
