American Oystercatcher

If you look to the right of the 2nd Oystercatcher, you can see one of the chicks.

The American Oystercatcher was one of the birds I hoped we would spot on our trip to Tern Island during the Alabama Coastal Birdfest. I drove to Dauphin Island early Saturday morning and met the group at the boat launch. We saw the first Oystercatcher flying toward us and landing on the rock jetties. Our guide knew there was a nesting triplet on Tern Island. She said that two females and a male were tending a nest of chicks. We were not able to get close because she didn’t want to spook them. Luckily one flew a little closer to us.
