Bellingrath Gardens started off as the fishing camp for Walter Bellingrath of the Mobile Coca-Cola Bottling Company. It was known as Belle Camp. His wife, Bessie Morse Bellingrath, loved flowers and started planting azaleas at Belle Camp. Their home on South Ann Street had extensive gardens and is credited with starting the Azalea Trail in Mobile. They built a home at Belle Camp and planted an even bigger garden.
